Real-time Decision Making For Shipboard Damage Control
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents a formalism called Time Interval Petri Networks (TIPNs) and shows their efficacy for model-based envisionment of real-time concurrent interacting processes with temporal constraints. The TIPN formalism is developed by extending Petri Networks to Time Interval Petri Networks. The process of TIPN construction from a state-process domain model is described. Experimental results in the domain of ship crisis decision-making show five orders of magnitude speed up over a first-principals numerical physical system simulator in a complex domain. An advantage of TIPNs is a graphical network representation that facilitates model construction, refinement, and comprehension.

Qualitative simulation of temporal concurrent processes using Time Interval Petri Nets
This paper presents a formalism called Time Interval Petri Nets (TIPNs), which are designed to support a qualitative simulation of temporal concurrent processes. One of the key features of TIPNs is a uniform use of time intervals throughout the model. This enables a natural and efficient representation of temporal uncertainty in inputs, outputs, and intermediate states of the qualitative simula...
متن کاملReal-Time Decision Support: Development and Assessment of a Real-Time Knowledge-Based System Embedded within a Real-Time Group Decision Support System
This research investigates the effects of a decision support system in the context of real-time, small group decision making. Following the March 1989 Ercon Valdez oil spill, development of a real-time expert system (called the Shipboard Piloting Expert System, or SPES) was begun. The SPES is a prototype decision aid designed to add knowledge-based decision support functionality to the integrat...
متن کاملAutonomic Control System Utilizing Smart Valve Technology
As the level of integration across and between shipboard systems has increased in recent years, there has been greater emphasis on strategies to improve situational awareness, survivability under damage conditions, crew reduction initiatives, Damage Assessment, and Damage Action Management System (DAMS) as well as agent based automation. The above objectives necessitate consideration of an Auto...
متن کاملA knowledge-based decision support system for shipboard damage control
The operational complexity of modern ships requires the use of advanced applications, called damage control systems (DCSs), able to assist crew members in the effective handling of dangerous events and accidents. In this article we describe the development of a knowledge-based decision support system (KDSS) integrated within a DCS designed for a national navy. The KDSS uses a hybrid design and ...
متن کاملSimulation and Visualization of a Shipboard DC Zonal Distribution System
This paper describes the simulation and visualization of a shipboard DC zonal electric power distribution system. The study system consists of six regulated buck converters supplying power to normal and critical loads. The Virtual Test Bed (VTB) software developed at the University of South Carolina is employed to conduct the simulations. The VTB supports multi-lingual and interactive simulatio...
